That’s correct! I received it last week from Roberto Traven. For those of you who don’t know Roberto Traven, he is a BJJ World Champion and an Abu Dhabi World Champion. Getting a black belt from Roberto Traven is like getting a college degree from Harvard.
The belt came totally unexpected. I just finished up with BJJ class when he pulled me aside and gave it to me. I was smiling ear to ear. It’s been a bucket list goal of mine to get a BJJ black belt and now I am one step away. I just hope my body can hold up long enough.
So, what this about me losing 15 pounds? During the holidays last year, I put on 15 pounds. My wife and I had taken a trip to her parent’s house, and I pigged out. Aside from getting married, 2012 wasn’t exactly a good year for me. My neck was in pain for a good part of the year, and I had to get an epidural injection to relieve myself of my suffering. Although, the pain had disappeared, so did a lot of the pushing strength in my right arm. I decided to take a few months off before going back to BJJ.
I slowed down and focused on my freelance web design and seo business. Unfortunately, my metabolism slowed down as well. I started having a harder time taking weight off. I have weighed around 190 pounds since I was 19 years old, but my weight started to increase since I wasn’t working out that hard. After Christmas passed, I stepped on the scale and weighed 210 pounds which was the highest that I weighed in a long time! I told my wife about it, and she told me to “join the club”.
As soon as I heard those words, I got furious and fired up. While most people are much heavier than they were in high school, I didn’t follow that popular trend. I prided myself on that, and I’d be damned if I was going to join that club.
I started out by focusing on my actions. I made a workout schedule that was feasible for me. In just a couple of months, I lost weight and became more toned. This is what I did.
- Pumped Iron (3 times per week)
- Jogged for 10 minutes (3 times per week)
- Jiu-Jitsu (3-4 times per week)
- Ate Healthy
The Jiu-Jitsu makes lose my weight, but it breaks my body down. Lifting weights keeps me from getting injured and gets me toned. The jogging is supplemental cardio. The eating healthy part? I ate lean foods and gave myself only 4 cheat meals a week.
I’m back to my regular weight now which is around 190-195 pounds, and I’m feeling good about it.
